Barbara Jones is an Award Winning Artist who has been painting for over 40 years. On Tuesday mornings Barbara provides tuition in the painting medium of your choice. She has been conducting art classes for 3 years at the Bairnsdale Arts Society and welcomes anyone who wants to learn the joy of painting. Beginners to more experienced are all welcome.

I discovered the joy of creating pictures when I was a child. I like many children loved to draw pictures and would trace pictures to learn how shapes form things. I started using oil paints when I was about 10 years old when my parents gave me an easel and paints for a Christmas present.
I painted on my own for many years and finally discovered the benefits of having a teacher when I went to lessons with one of Victoria’s top 20 artists at the time, Max Casey. That started me on the journey of attending other top artist's classes. I have had the privilege of having one on one teaching with world class artists such as Lyn Diefenbach, Ross Patterson, David Taylor, Lisa Wang, Hermen Pekel (they teach and exhibit around the world).
I like to attend workshops as I find the benefit from each one is learning something that could improve or learn a new technique that would elevate my art work to another level. I used to be nervous about attending these classes as I felt my work was not at their level, but I soon realised that these top level artists also had to start somewhere and there was no judgment, just encouragement.
Over the years I have entered many art shows and I have been honoured to win several awards which gave me encouragement to keep on in my artwork and continue to try and improve myself.
I have found that I love to teach others and in the teaching, the teacher is always the greatest learner. I encourage all that come to my classes to push themselves beyond the comfortable and challenge their artwork to go beyond only what they know they can do. To try something new, because that is when we really learn.
Being part of the Bairnsdale and District Arts Society has been a great experience for me. I have been able to meet many other like-minded people who love to create art. The Arts Society is a wonderful learning environment also providing the all important social aspect which provides encouragement to all of us.
I will continue to push myself to improve techniques, try new things and share what I learn. That for me is fun!
